Home Improvement
Fox is trying to rise to the responsibilities of home ownership…
His fix-it’ness is… improving? But seems he’s still got a long ways to go.

Actually, that’s what the wall-switch DOES – it cuts off the power to the light…
[pun]Today’s ‘Hey Fox’ is a live one.[/pun]
… I don’t get it. Is this because the light switch is easier for someone else to flip without thinking? Or are there 3 cables and a relay in the lamp? Everything’s overengineered nowadays, like WiFi kettles…
So, not to over explain a joke, but this one needs a bit of background it seems. I live in a fairly old house, and she wiring is… suspect. It predates a lot of the over-engineering. For example, there are almost no actual grounds in the whole place. If you just turn off the switch it will open a relay, but there are still live wires in a lot of the fixtures that can ground through you.
Since Fox doesn’t have the precaution of, say, rubber sole boots, he can ground out pretty easily though the metal ladder.
Especially in older buildings it’s important to turn off the breaker as the switch may not be as safe as it should be.
Thanks.
So, I guess the switch is on the ground(neutral) wire rather than the live one?
This did give me a flashback to when I was ~fourteen and wanted to replace a bulb in the basement. For obvious reasons it was dark, but I knew from memory where the light was. I reached up to grab the bulb…
… which wasn’t in the socket. But suddenly my thumb was.
When I was done shaking the pain off, I had somehow ended up on a tree.
